Carousel Frame staked her claim as the top contender for the inaugural Frances Dodge Van Lennep Filly and Mare Pacing Series at Pompano Park when she captured the first of two $15,000 divisions of the Van Lennep Preview on Friday in 1:52.3. Starting from post three with George Napolitano Jr. at the lines, Carousel Frame settled briefly in fifth place through the early stages of the race as several horses took their shot for the lead, with Nojoke Island (Andy Santeramo) winning a duel with Hypnotize (Kevin Wallis) to show the way through an opening quarter mile in :28.3. As the pacers made their first journey by the grandstand, race favorite Flo Found George (Bruce Ranger) was angled off the pylons from fourth place to make her push towards the top, but her time on the lead was short lived as Carousel Frame quickly rolled alongside and put her head in front as the field reached the half-mile marker in :56.3. Esmeralda Semalu (Ricky Macomber) briefly headed Carousel Frame down the backstretch, but the daughter of Dragon Again fought back gallantly along the rail to reclaim the top spot through a three-quarters split in 1:24.1, and remained in that position for the remainder of the race, holding off Flo Found George in the final yards to prevail by 1 ¾ lengths. Carousel Frame returned $13.60, $5.00, and $3.40 for the victory. Flo Found George paid $3.00 and $2.60 for second, while Hypnotize brought in $2.80 for third. Owned by Let it Ride Stables Inc. and Robert Cooper Stables Inc., and trained locally by Jeff Webster, Carousel Frame is a 16-time winner from 72 lifetime starts, and boasts a career bankroll of $252,226.
Two races later, Up Front Lady tallied her second victory of the year when taking the second division of the $15,000 Frances Dodge Van Lennep Pacing Series Preview in 1:53.4. Driven from post seven by Ricky Macomber Jr., Up Front Lady bided her time in sixth place through fractions of :28.2, :57.1, and 1:25.1, before sweeping three-wide on the final turn and charging to the front in mid-stretch to score the half-length victory. Tintabella N (Daryl Bier) crossed the wire second, while Queens Gambit N (Dale Hiteman) checked in third.
Up Front Lady is a 5-year-old daughter of Dragon Again, and is owned by C. Ed Mullinax of Amherst, Ohio, and trained by Richard Macomber. The $25,000 first leg of the Frances Dodge Van Lennep Filly and Mare Pacing Series will be held at Pompano on Saturday, February 15. The series continues with the second leg on February 22, and will culminate with the $50,000 final on February 29.
