Published reports state that New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine has received a financial committment from the Atlantic City casino owners to subsidize purses at the racetracks in the state, although the agreement currently calls for a committment only $30 million over the next three years, far less than the $86 million provided over the last four years.
A story in Friday's Newark Star-Ledger said Corzine met with the casino owners on Monday and received the pledge, according to an unnamed administration official. "We met with them and said the facts of life are that we will continue the subsidy for the next three or four years," said the source. "Obviously they are going to step up to the plate."
New Jersey lobbyist Leon Zimmerman told the newspaper that Corzine hopes too have the subsidy package finalized quickly. "He (Corzine) also said, 'I won't take no for an answer,'" said Zimmerman.
