CC Snickers makes triumphant return

August 11, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

CC Snickers, making her first start back after sustaining an injury in early June, picked up where she left off, winning a $12,000 Indiana Sires Stakes leg Friday evening in 1:58.4. The victory secured a place in the August 25 final for sophomore filly trotters. Larry Miller’s ABC Bay Bee won another division with a 1:56.4 performance.

A freshman divisional champion last summer at Indiana Downs, CC Snickers won her first three stakes starts this spring at Hoosier Park. The Harrys Star Ranger filly finished third in a division of the Casual B at Mohawk, but suffered an injury in her left rear suspensory. CC Snickers responded well to treatment, and in a recent qualifier wired the field in 2:00.4.

“They hand walked her and she kept getting more sound,” said Rick Farrington, who guided the filly to victory. “I was happy with her qualifier, but I didn’t think she’d be tight enough.”

Starting from the outside post in the field of six, Farrington and CC Snickers left the gate fourth as Ponda Girl set the early fractions. Racing to the half the driver pulled the Steve Waller-trained filly and moved to the front. The duo would overtake No Credit Needed at the top of the stretch and draw away by two lengths in the non-betting contest. Secret Gold finished second and Awsome Andrea was third.

CC Snickers collected her fourth win in five starts this season. She is owned by Waller, Dodie Copp, Lathan Heath and O’Ville Racing Stable of Longwood, Fla. The time equaled her lifetime best mark.

In the first non-betting event on the program ABC Bay Bee finally broke through to earn her first victory of the season. Driven by trainer Joe Putnam, the ABC Garland filly captured the $12,000 final leg in a lifetime best performance. Spunky’s Dream was a length back in second and Pretty New finished third.

“She’s had two bad trips in a row,” Putnam said afterward. “She’s been racing pretty well all year. Tonight we got as good a trip as we’ve had all year.”

Starting from the rail in the field of seven, Putnam was able to place ABC Bay Bee third throughout fractions of :28, :58 and 1:28. After catching cover around the turn, the sophomore posted a 28-second last quarter to nab her seventh career victory. She has hit the board in six of 12 starts this season.

A field of nine sophomore colt and gelding trotters assembled for the final preliminary round of Indiana Sires Stakes action Friday. Favorite DC Northern, in rein to Dan Shetler, wired the field en route to a 1:57.1 score. The New And Notable colt's winning margin was three and one-half lengths. Super Discipline raced second while Awesome Dreamer rounded out the trifecta.

Owned and trained by Lester Raber, DC Northern collected his sixth win in 11 seasonal starts. Winner of the $100,000 Indiana Sires Stakes final at Hoosier Park in June, the colt possesses more than $90,000 in career earnings.
