Celebrity Secret edges Crazed, Dewey third

Return Home
October 04, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Celebrity Secret held off Crazed and upset Deweycheatumnhowe in the second elimination of the Kentucky Futurity, winning by a neck in 1:52.3, and forcing a two-horse race-off to determine the 116th Futurity.

Deweycheatumnhowe was rough-gaited behind the gate and John Campbell sent Celebrity Secret toward the front from post five. Campbell yielded to Clerk Magistrate and driver Trevor Ritchie just past the quarter (:27.4). At about the time Clerk Magistrate hit the half in :56, Ray Schnittker had Dewey underway to challenge on the outside. By the turn Dewey was alongside Clerk Magistrate, and Campbell tipped Celebrity Secret to the outside, with Crazed following.

Dewey had cleared to the lead by the top of the homestretch, but Celebrity Secret trotted a :27.3 final quarter to win by a neck for trainer Staffan Lind, while Crazed's furious last quarter in :27 flat put him within a nose of winning for trainer Frank Antonacci. Dewey held on for third with his :28.1 last panel.

The win by Celebrity Secret, a colt by Yankee Glide, forced a race-off, if both trainers decide to bring their horses back for a third heat.
