Two very short-priced favorites proved victorious in the brace of eliminations for the Joseph Carney Memorial Trot at Rockingham Park on Sunday, and moved on to the race's $50,000 final at The Rock next week. In the first of the $17,500 eliminations, Scorpion Moon (Armbro Scorpion-Angie’s Nugget) raced exactly as is expected of a 1-9 shot, while besting five other trotters in the field to complete the mile in 1:56.2 on a "fast" track. The 7-year-old gelding, driven by Jonathan Roberts, went to the front and never looked back and set easy fractions of :29.2, :59.1 and 1:28.1 to draw off by 3 1/2 lengths.
"He got a good inside post (number two) and that definitely helped, and racing on a big track like this also helps," owner and trainer Tracy Brainard, who was making her first start at the Salem landmark, said. "I thought that as long as he got a good trip he'd be okay. I was just hoping to make it to the final, and now I'm looking forward to bringing him back for it next Sunday."
Bo Didley N took second, and was followed under the wire by I'm A Cool Breeze, Local Girl, McCoy, and Los Barvos. In the second $17,500 elimination, Stiletto (Mr. Vic-Armbro Natural), sent off as the even money choice in the field of six, had no trouble putting away the rest with Sean Bier in the sulky. The 8-year-old Crissy Crissman trainee never relinquished the front, as he trotted home in 1:56.4 while increasing his lead through the lane to win going away by 5 1/4 lengths. "He speaks for himself," Bier said when asked if the race as easy as it seemed. "This horse has already made almost a million dollars." Slave Dream, Mister Lucky Vec, BJ's Chinook, Memphis Hall, and Machu Picchu rounded-out the field, in that order. The top finishers will be invited back next Sunday to contest the final, held each year in honor of Joe Carney, the late president and owner of Rockingham. (Rockingham Park)
