Stienam p,3,1:53.4 ($1,355,474), the champion 3-year-old pacing filly of 1985 who waged thrilling battles with another champion filly, Amneris, was euthanized this past week at Hawk’s Cry Farm in Springboro, Ohio, where she had been living as a pensioner. An infected left front hoof, first diagnosed this past November, was intensively treated but failed to respond, and thus the decision was made to put her down. The winner of the 1985 Breeders Crown was owned throughout her life by John “Junior” Powell of Toledo, and was co-owned during her brilliant sophomore season by Gil Short and Jim Leadbetter. Stienam and Amneris were rivals throughout their sophomore year, but Stienam got the upper hand--by a head--when they met in the 1985 Breeders Crown at Northlands Park. For trainer Kelly O’Donnell and driver Buddy Gilmour it was an exact reversal of the result from the Breeders Crown freshman filly pace one year earlier, in which Amneris prevailed by a neck at Maywood Park and thereafter was named that year’s freshman champion. Stienam was one of Falcon Almahurst’s most successful performers, was out of the Columbia George mare Margaux, and was bred in Ohio by ACA Stable of Wilmington. As a broodmare, Stienam produced 15 registered foals, from 1987 through 2004, of which 11 have taken marks under 2:00. Her top performers include Stienam’s Girl p,3,1:53.2 ($102,282), Patriot Stena p,4,1:52.3 ($178,478), and Sleek Style p,4,1:53h ($191,971). (USTA)
