The father-son duo of Carl and Jody Jamieson teamed up to sweep both Champlain Stakes divisions for 2-year-old filly pacers on Friday night (Sept. 5) at Mohawk Racetrack as they won with Break The News (1:53.3) and She's A Fan (1:54).
In the opening $131,762 division, Jody Jamieson sent the She's A Great Lady runner-up, Break The News, straight to the front from post two and was able to control the first half in a tepid 58 seconds. Race favorite Fashion Week was reserved in fourth spot and made her move to the outside just past the half.
Jamieson asked his filly for more pace. The daughter of Western Ideal - Scandal responded and hit the third station in 1:25.4 while widening her advantage to a whopping eight lengths as the field turned for home. From there, Break The News continued to pour it on and crossed the wire on cruise control. She was four lengths better than second-place finisher Pumptuous with Kiss Me Kate landing the show spot. It was the second win in nine trips postward this season for Break The News who is trained by Carl Jamieson. He co-owns along with Thomas Kyron, Arthur Slack and George Harrison. The winner's share of the purse gives her just over $280,000 in earnings. The Jamieson tandem clicked again in the second split - worth $133,762 - with She's A Fan. The daughter of Artiscape - Tear Drop used front-end tactics throughout and then held off a late rally from Northern Duchess to record the biggest payday of her young career. It was another length back to Special Sweetheart who rallied to pick up third. It was the fifth win in nine starts this season for She's A Fan, who is co-owned by the elder Jamieson along with Thomas Kyron, George Harrison and the Hastings Mill Inc. Jody said in a post-race interview that the filly was scheduled to have surgery to remove an ankle chip and that it might have been her final start of the campaign. (WEG)
