Chancey Lady turned in a gritty effort over the off going on Saturday night (Aug. 9) at Mohawk Racetrack to capture the $140,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final for 3-year-old filly pacers in 1:53.
After sweeping both eliminations a week ago, driver Mike Saftic was forced to make a choice going into this week's final and stuck with the daughter of Camluck - Art Of Design, who did not disappoint the veteran reinsman.
Saftic was in no hurry as the wings folded and guided Chancey Lady away in third position from post 2 as last week's other elimination winner, Im Just Special, put up the first split in 28 seconds with A Fiesty Affair sitting in second.
Just as the field straightened up towards the half, Chancey Lady blasted out and took over command right at the half in :55.4. The pint-sized filly continued to roll along in the third quarter and put up the next fraction in 1:23.4. Im Just Special stayed right with the pacesetter and moved to the outside to challenge in the stretch. Though valiant in defeat, she was unable to get past the wheel of the eventual winner. Style Semalu closed stoutly along the pylons to pick up the show spot. It was the fifth win in just seven tries this season for Chancey Lady, now conditioned by John Pentland, who also captured a Gold Final back on May 30 at London, along with the $733,031 Fan Hanover Final at Mohawk on June 14. The lion's share of Saturday's purse increased her seasonal bankroll to just over $550,000 and lifted her over the $900,000 mark lifetime for owner Niele Jiwan of Burnaby, British Columbia. (WEG)
