Charley outlasts Kenneth J

Charley Barley waited out a sizzling 27-second third quarter by pacesetter Kenneth J before wearing him down in the stretch to win the $600,000 Breeders Crown for 2-year-old colt pacers in 1:53.3, giving Mike Lachance his third Crown win on the night.

Kenneth J and Ron Pierce assumed command just past the :56.1 half and drew away by open lengths around the turn. Charley Barley tipped out turning into the stretch and grabbed the win by a neck. Artzina was third.

Charley Barley is trained by Vernon-based conditioner Kimberlie Miller. The Western Hanover colt is owned by John Ezzo and Lisa Adkins of New York.
