Charlie Norway dies

Charles Jacob Norway died Oct. 10 after a long illness. Mr. Norway was a trainer and driver for nearly 50 years and a well-known fixture on the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania circuits. Often brash and unapologetic, Mr. Norway was the proverbial tough guy with a heart of gold. He was often the shipper who people called at 3 a.m. when their sick horse needed a emergency ride to New Bolton Center.

A native of Manville, N.J., Mr. Norway served in the military and later ventured into civilian life as a trucker and general contractor. In the 1950s he became involved in harness racing.and during his racing career he had developed and trained quite a few good horses, notably the trotters JEF's Bargain, Get A Move On and JEF's Comfort. More recently he managed the careers of his last two horses, Seductive Lady and Smashing Gus's Toy.

He is survived by his wife, Maryann; a son Charles; and two grandchildren.—By David Mattia
