Cheyenne Knight claims Pocono feature

Cheyenne Knight came back from dead last in the early going to rally and win the featured Open Handicap pace on Friday night at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The race carried a purse of $30,000.

 

Leaving from the #7 post in a field of 9 as a 4-1 third betting choice, Cheyenne Knight, a 4-year-old gelding from the barn of trainer Kimberly Asher, dropped to the back of the pack immediately and was still there as the field hit the quarter-mile marker. Driver Larry Stalbaum sent him to the outside in the front stretch 3rd-over on the outside. Cheyenne Knight was still 6th at the three-quarter pole but moved up to 4th at the top of the stretch right behind a wall of horses. He then split two horses on the outside in a thrilling stretch drive to get up to win by a length in 1:52 on a sloppy track. Blatantly Good finished 2nd while Golden Receiver was 3rd.

 

Cheyenne Knight, sired by Dragon Again and owned by Higo Iodice of Briarcliff manor, NY, won for the 7th time in 21 tries in 2009. The victory was the 15th of his career, pushing his career earnings over $126,000. (Pocono)
