Christiana Hanover pulled off an upset in the $221,500 Moni Maker at The Red Mile on Thursday night, sweeping up on the outside to score over Glide Power in 1:54.2. Bramalea Hanover, the leader to the quarter, finished third and and Hambletonian Oaks champion Bar Slide held on for fourth.
The 29-year-old horsewoman Riina Rekila trains, drives and owns Christiana Hanover, who earned her fourth win in 11 starts this year. The filly started the race from post nine and went off at odds of 52-1.
"I never got to the pylons the entire race," said Rekila of her winning trip, which included being four-deep on the last turn and then tipping five-wide for the stretch drive..
The race got underway with Glide Power leaving strongly from post two and Ultimate Cameron also in high gear from post four. Brian Sears took command with Glide Power while Trevor Ritchie settled second with Ultimate Cameron.
Meanwhile, the bulky 12-horse field left several horses stacked up on the outside, and one of them was Bar Slide. Tim Tetrick elected to send Bar Slide on to the front and was moving on the leaders as the quarter-mile time flashed :27.1. In the early backstretch Tetrick and Bar Slide cleared to the front.
By the time Bar Slide reached the half in :55, the outer tier was advancing, and Trevor Ritchie missed his chance to move Ultimate Cameron off the pylons. Cantab It All, driven by Dan Dube, was doing the work first-over, followed by Springtime Volo and Dave Magee, and Christiana Hanover.
Bar Slide was the leader at the three quarters in 1:23.1, but she was obviously tiring. At the top of the lane Rekila angled her filly wide to give her a clear shot. Several fillies dug in as the wire neared, with Christiana Hanover, a daughter of Andover Hall, getting up in the final strides.
An $11,000 yearling purchase by Esa Lahtinen, Christiana Hanover has now earned more than $230,000 for Rekila and Lahtinen's Overseas Farms Ltd.
