Luke Kruytbosch, the announcer at Churchill Downs, Ellis Park and Turf Paradise, was found dead in his Indiana apartment Monday at the age of 47. Kruytbosch had just finished announcing the races at Churchill Downs earlier this month and had moved to Evansville, Ind., where he had announced the first three programs of the season at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky.
The cause of death has not been announced but published reports revealed he had been recently given medication by a doctor because he had not been feeling well, with a local coroner stating Kruytbosch had displayed all the symptoms of a heart attack.
"The entire Churchill Downs family and all of racing are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of Luke Kruytbosch,” said Steve Sexton, president of Churchill Downs and executive vice president of Churchill Downs Inc. in a press release. “Luke was a marvelous talent with a timeless announcing style that connected directly with fans throughout North America. He was a gregarious person who loved life and was great ambassador for racing. But Luke was never happier than when he was in the announcer’s booth–especially on the first Saturday in May for the Kentucky Derby. This is a terrible loss for our track and our sport, and Luke will be deeply missed.”
Kruytbosch, only the fifth announcer ever at Churchill, first called the races at that Lousivlle racetrack in 1999. He had begun announcing after graduating from the University of Arizona's Race Track Industry program.
Over his career Kruytbosch also announced the races at The Downs at Albequerque, Santa Fe, Sunland Park, Ruidoso Downs and Hollywood Park.
