Citation, a 6-year-old son of Conway Hall-Italian Cut bred in the U.S. by T.D. and Linda Van Camp, won the second elimination of the Elitlopp, defeating Red Chili Pirat in 1:53.2, with Mr. Muscleman finishing third after a second-over trip.
Citation and driver Erik Adielsson started from post one and took command of the race quickly. Red Chili Pirat, who started from post three, followed and tucked in behind Citation, a move that gave him a two-hole trip. Mr. Muscleman started from post eight but driver Ron Pierce was able to work out a second-over trip with the American horse.
With about one-quarter of the mile remaining Mr. Muscleman and Pierce pulled alongside Citation, but they could not go by. Many observers in the crowd were surprised that Mr. Muscleman was not able to sprint by after the second-over trip since Citation had done all the work.
Giant Superman, a son of Giant Force, finished fourth to also advance.
The second and deciding heat was scheduled to be held about 90 minutes after the second heat, or at approximately 11 a.m.
