Citation wins big in Sweden

July 26, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The Hugo Åbergs Memorial was held Tuesday night at the Jaegersro track in Malmo, Sweden, and the American-bred Citation, a 5-year-old son of Conway Hall, was the winner in 1:54.1.

The wide open event lost some of its drama when Citation took the lead for driver Erik Adielsson and no one challenged. After a fast opening quarter (:27.2), Citation was permitted to slow the pace for the middle half and then turned on his high speed again for a :27.2 final quarter.

Norvelous Hanover (SJ’s Photo) and the Italian-Swedish bullet Malabar Circle Ås (Malabar Man) did not have their usual attacks. Jetstile (Coktail Jet) took second and Spring Ray took third.

The Italian national anthem was played as Citation is owned by Scuderia d’Hilly Farm of Italy. They earned about $135,000 with the victory.

The third leg of the World Cup is the Nat Ray Trot, set for Aug. 5 at the Meadowlands. The series will then continue at the Cagnes-sur-Mer track on the French Riviera on Aug. 10 before the final takes place at the new Kazan track in Russia.

Presently the French horse Kool du Caux (Bijou du Bignon), who is injured and sidelinded presently, leads the World Cup point standings. Citation earned 50 points with his score in the Hugo Åbergs Memorial.
