Closing night at Hawthorne

Return Home
June 17, 2006 | Print View

Hawthorne’s closing night features, the $105,000 Erwin F. Dygert Memorial and the $96,000 Robert F. Carey Memorial, were won by Dunkster and Cheyenne Hollywood, respectively. Dunkster dug in and refused to be passed by Dink Adoo while the Julie Miller-trained Cheyenne Hollywood wore down pacesetter He Wants It All.

Miller trained Cheyenne Hollywood in Chicago for regular trainer Robbie Siegelman and lessee the Cheyenne Gang LLC. The 4-year-old Western Hanover stallion picked up his fourth win in 20 starts this season with his 1:50 score in the Carey Memorial.

He Want It All took the lead just before reaching the half in :54.1, but the even-money favorite was edged at the wire. Wheretheymoneywentn took third.

The 2005 Dygert winner Muscles Marinara was back to defend his title and despite starting from post nine was made the 3-5 favorite. Driver Michael Oosting sent him flying into the first turn and they took the lead in a :27.3 first panel.

Battleshoe Victor raced first-over through the first half, but never pulled alongside Muscles Marinara. Driver Kurt Sugg tipped Dunkster for the second-over trip down the backstretch, but finally sent his charge three-wide in the last turn to take on the leader.

Dunkster edged Muscles Marinara, but then had to hold off Dink Adoo, who had raced in last year’s Dygert for trainer Ken Rucker. Ryan Anderson was at the lines. Plea finished third.

Dunkster is owned by Dean Davis, who flew to Chicago to watch the race along with his son, Scott. Dunkster now has 10 wins in 16 starts this season and his Dygert purse check pushed him to just a few thousand dollars shy of $600,000 in career earnings.
