Clowns Smile wins Woodbine series finale

Clowns Smile was all business Saturday night, posting a sharp 1:52.4 win in the $43,000(C) Valedictory Series final for 3-year-old colt gelding pacers at Woodbine Racetrack.

The round-one winner was defeated by Mr. Saratoga in last week's second leg in his first start for new trainer Casie Coleman, but turned the tables on that rival tonight with a strong first-over effort to score by 1 1/2 lengths.

The son of Grinfromeartoear-Brain Child sat third throughout much of the first half and watched as Just The Begrinning put up opening fractions of :27 and :55. At that point, Mark MacDonald sent his charge to the outside and the pair took over command at the third marker of 1:23.1.

From there, Clowns Smile was never seriously threatened and delivered as the solid $3.60 top choice. Mr. Saratoga settled for the runner-up spot while Hide The Cash came on to finish third.

The win was the ninth this season for owner Ellis Bryant Inc. of Kentucky and the first for new owners Steve Calhoun and Mike Lindley of Ontario who recently bought into the pacer. His seasonal bankroll now stands at just over $115,000 (C). (WEG)
