Codey wants Big M slots

Return Home
November 11, 2004 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Incoming New Jersey Gov. Richard Codey is reportedly planning to introduce a plan to allow about 5,000 slot machines at the Meadowlands. The budget for the fiscal year 2006 will include the plan which Codey projects would raise $275 million for the state.

Reports state that an agreement between the state and casino operators in Atlantic City is "close" and that a casino tax break will likely be offered for their endorsement.

Codey added that a portion of the slot revenues could go to the casinos to compensate them for any losses they might suffer. He also said that one possibility is to allow the casinos to operate the slot machines at the Meadowlands.

Codey also has reportedly stated he would like to see a new football stadium built at the Meadowlands.

The Meadowlands may also see some in-state night-time racetrack competition next year as a Codey has said he would like to see lights installed at Monmouth Park Thoroughbred track. Monmouth would run evening cards on weekdays while Saturdays and Sundays would continue with daytime posts.
