Codey wants Big M VLTs

March 02, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Although he never specifically mentioned video lottery terminals (VLTs) in his 2006 New Jersey budget address Tuesday, New Jersey's Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey has included $150 million in revenue to be brought in by the addition of the machines at the Meadowlands.

Codey is reportedly hoping to have a temporary facility in place at the Meadowlands in 2006 with 1,500-2,000 VLTs in operation.

New Jersey's constitution bars casino gambling anywhere but in Atlantic City. Still to be determined if the VLTs are slot machines or, as the governor maintains, part of the state lottery since the machines will pay out according to a formula involving the total number of people playing over a given period, as a lottery does. Slot machines are considered to pit players against the machines.
