While dismissed by the crowd at 15-1, Coldheartedrevenge exacted retribution in winning the $50,000 New Hampshire Sweepstakes at Rockingham Park on Saturday while equaling the track and New England records for aged pacing geldings. The seven-year-old son of Art's Conquest, trained and driven patiently by Brewer Adams, bided his time at the back of the pack of seven as the leaders, including 1-5 favorite Load The Dice, set sprite fractions of :27.1, 54.3, and 1:22.3 on a fast track. Coldheartedrevenge came charging late through the lane on the far outside to win Rockingham's signature event by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:50 and tie the mark set by Basil Hanover on July 8, 2006.
"They were moving down there pretty quick early on and I was hoping to follow Ronny Cushing's horse (Armbro Damien) because I thought he was the best one to follow," Adams, Rockingham's leading trainer in 2007, said following the trophy presentation. "It worked out okay. Ronny was first-over and from then on, I asked him and he responded well."
Coldheartedrevenge, who finished third in one of the two $15,000 eliminations for the New Hampshire Sweepstakes here last Saturday, returned $32.60, $13.80, and $6.20 while Load The Dice held on for second and Armbro Damien took third. Coldheartedrevenge keyed a $106.80 perfecta and a $435.80 trifecta
For his efforts, Coldheartedrevenge pushed his lifetime earnings to just shy of $700,000 with the winner's share of the purse and upped his record to 41 wins in 150 starts. He is owned by Thomas Ceraso, Jr. of Stamford, Ct. and John Giumara, Jr. of White Plains, New York. (Rockingham Park)
