Colt finals at Springfield

Return Home
August 17, 2005 | Print View

Brookview Flame was the surprise winner in the 3-year-old colt and gelding trot and Team Hutch returned to form in the 3-year-old colt and gelding pace as those finals were held in the Illinois State Fair Colt Stakes at Springfield Wednesday.

Brookview Flame went wire to wire for Andy Miller, winning in a lifetime best 1:55.2 by 2 3/4 lengths over The Vicster and Tim Tetrick. Vanished and Ron Marsh were third.

Trained by Rick Schrock for owners Jerry Graham and his son, J.D. Graham, the son of Valley Victor won for the fifth time in 11 starts this year. Race favorite Sherrie's Delight, who came to Springfield undefeated, made another break like he did in his elimination last Saturday and finished fifth.

Team Hutch, with Ledford up, moved into the lead at the half then held off favored I Can Only Imagine and Tony Morgan by half a length with second-favorite Mandala Quest and Miller third in the 1:50.2 mile, a career-best for the winning Sportsmaster gelding.

Fifth in the Meadowlands Pace final, Team Hutch had gone five races since winning his last race, the Hanover Stakes at Balmoral, and now has seven victories in 13 starts for trainer Homer Hochstetler and owners Joy and Bonnie Hutchinson.
