Trainer Steve Elliott and co-owner Jeff Snyder confirmed to harnessracing.com on Monday morning that Well Said, the winner earlier this year of the Meadowlands Pace and North America Cup, and most recently a Simcoe division, will be entered in the upcoming Little Brown Jug Sept. 24 in Delaware, Ohio.
“We’re leaning towards it. Steve wants to go, so it looks that way. (Well Said) has never been on a half-mile track before but he had a good tightener the other night,” said Snyder, referring to Well Said’s 1:50.2 Simcoe effort for his eighth win in 10 starts this year to increase his seasonal earnings to $1,651,750 and career total to more than $2.2 million for Snyder and his partner, Susan Grange’s Lothlorien.
“As of right now, we’re going,” said Elliott. “I thought we were going all along, but (owners Jeff Snyder and Susan Grange) wanted to talk about it (after the Simcoe). It’s one of the few races I haven’t won and this is my best shot at it.” Snyder said he plans on flying from his home state of New York to Ohio via private plane to watch the Jug. Snyder, who felt the sting of Jug disappointment when his heavily-favored Cam’s Card Shark was scratched “lame” during post parade from the 1994 renewal, has one Jug victory to his credit: Million Dollar Cam in 2002.
Elliott, and the other trainers contemplating a Jug start, will have to make their decision by the time the entry box closes at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. The draw for the Jug races will be held shortly afterward.
