Conway Maid scores again

April 17, 2007 | Print View

Three-year-old trotting fillies were out in full force on Monday evening at Woodbine Racetrack to do battle in round two of the Celias Counsel Trotting Series, which featured a pair of $18,000(C) divisions won by Conway Maid and Moment Of Zen.

Conway Maid notched her third consecutive win, and her second straight in the series, when she powered to a 1:59.3 score for catch-driver Jody Jamieson.

Jamieson sat fourth through a first quarter of :28.3 with the 3-year-old daughter of Conway Hall–Maiden Lane before making a quick brush to the top as the field entered the backstretch. Conway Maid cleared easily and went on to post middle panels of :59.1 and 1:29 before coasting home to win by three lengths in a time of 1:59.3.

Delcrestclassyhall (Roger Mayotte), who was a divisional winner in week one of the series, was second with Manvers Maple (Mike Saftic) third.

“There’s a pretty good head wind tonight,” said Jamieson. “She wanted to trot a bit around the final turn, and I let her. She finished well in hand. It was basically a training trip. The wind hit her in the face coming off the final turn, and she just drove right through it.”

Mike Keeling conditions Conway Maid, a career winner of $37,600(C) for the partnership of the Stake Your Claim Stable of Secaucus, N.J. and PC Wellwood Enterprises Inc. of Cambridge, Ont.

Moment Of Zen went to the front and didn’t look back for driver Steve Condren, who guided the Carman Hie-trainee to an impressive 1:59.4 decision in division number two.

The 3-year-old daughter of Dream Vacation–Auntie W chopped out splits of :28.4, :59.1 and 1:30.2 before kicking home in :29.2 en route to the 1:59.4 score over Sportyportia (Phil Hudon) and Paradox Trillium (Jack Moiseyev).

“She was a little bit weak at the wire last week, but she’s a filly that looks like she has a bit of a future,” said driver Steve Condren. “I wanted to grab some lengths coming off the turn tonight. That’s a big mile out there this evening.”

Andy Demetrious of Campbellville, Ontario holds the papers on Moment Of Zen, who now boasts a career bankroll of $29,700(C).

Condren also had a chance to offer a quick update on Pure Ivory, his multiple O’Brien Award winner that spent the winter in Georgia.

“She’s probably not going to be ready until the middle of May,” said Condren. “She’s grown up a bit and filled out real good. She looks great.”

The top ten money earning fillies from the preliminary legs of the Celias Counsel Trotting Series will have the chance to line up on the gate for next Monday’s $49,200(C) final. (WEG)
