The duo of EJ’s Copperstone and driver Don Irvine, Jr. raced down the stretch to win the fourth leg of the Indiana Sire Stakes on Friday, June 13 at Hoosier Park. This was the fourth win for EJ’s Copperstone in four races this season.

Savanna’s Love, guided by Hoosier Park’s leading driver, Trace Tetrick, raced out to take the early lead over the 12-horse field. Reaching the quarter-mile marker in :25.3, Savanna’s Love held a comfortable two length lead over the favorite, EJ’s Copperstone.

Racing to the halfway mark in :55, Savanna’s Love held the lead, with EJ’s Copperstone close behind. At the three-quarter mile mark in a time of 1:26, EJ’s Copperstone passed Savanna’s Love to take control.

In the last quarter, EJ’s Copperstone increased her lead over the field. The 3-year-old pacing filly went on to win in 1:54.1, by five lengths. Alexabeth, driven by Ricky Macomber, Jr., and Our Dear Nicole, managed by Don Eash, rounded-out the top three.

Owned by L.J. Stone and Philip M. Hawk of Gaston, Ind., EJ’s Copperstone has won 11 out of 13 races in her career and has earned more than $124,000, lifetime. The Lease On Life filly returned $3.00, $2.20 and $2.10. EJ’s Copperstone is trained by Steve Gray.

The $100,000 (est.) Indiana Sire Stakes Final will be raced at Hoosier Park on Saturday, June 28. The race will be a part of Hoosier Cup Night, on which purses will exceed $1 million.

The matinee race card began at 1 p.m. (EDT), to accommodate a special evening at the new Hoosier Park Racing and Casino. Sammy L. Davis, a Medal of Honor winner, gave a speech to special guests in the Homestretch Restaurant following racing. Then, guests went outdoors for a free concert provided by Lee Greenwood. Greenwood concluded his concert with his hit "God Bless the USA."

Live racing will have a special post time on Saturday, June 14, with the first race going behind the gate at 5 p.m. The evening's racing program will be followed by a special performance by the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, with fireworks beginning at sunset. (Hoosier)
