According to a Wednesday news report on the Asbury Park Press, New Jersey, web site, horseman Eric Ledford, his father, and two associates pleaded guilty Wednesday in Superior Court, but there is also a deal in the works that could allow Eric Ledford to be back racing soon.

The four--Eric, his father Seldon Ledford, and Ryan and Ardena Dailey--will be sentenced April 5 by Judge Bette C. Uhrmacher. The four entered guilty pleas Wednesday to charges that involve possession, knowledge of possession, or failure to report possession of controlled dangerous substances in a case authorities originally had said involved the blood-doping of racehorses.

The Asbury Park story said the judge is expected to issue one-year probationary terms and fines under terms of the plea agreements.

Eric Ledford's attorney, Standardbred horse owner Howard Taylor, told the Asbury Park Press, "We're very close to finalizing a deal which hopefully will have Eric Ledford back racing in the near future."

Racing Commission Executive Director Francesco Zanzuccki told the Asbury Park Press, "The penalties are still in effect, and no stays have been issued. The administrative aspect of the case has not been resolved yet, but there is a proposed settlement that hasn't been finalized."

Zanzuccki said a settlement could be ready for the full Racing Commission board to act on at its Feb. 14 meeting.

Last year Eric Ledford and Seldon Ledford were suspended 10 1/2 years and each was fined $12,000 by the Racing Commission. Their attorneys have sued to have the penalties overturned. Ryan and Ardena Dailey were given eight-year suspensions and fined $10,000 each by the commission.

Veterinarian John R. Witmer was arrested with the others in March. A date has not yet been set for his case in court.
