Crazed wins Vernon qualifier

Frank Antonacci told harnessracing.com Friday morning that his star 3-year-old colt trotter Crazed is on target for his upcoming start in the Matron at Dover Downs, with the son of Credit Winner capturing a qualifier at Vernon Downs on Thursday. Ironically, Crazed bested a Ray Schnittker-trained trotter in that qualifier, but the win came over the the 3-year-old filly Epangeline, not Deweycheatumnhowe.

With Antonacci driving, Crazed sat the pocket trip in the qualifier behind a second Antonacci trainee, Gladiator Lindy, driven by Howard Okusko Jr. The 4-year-old Gladiator Lindy, riding a three-race win streak, set fractions of :29, 1:00.2 and 1:30.1 as Antonacci bided his time in second with Crazed. Down the stretch Crazed trotted by his stablemate to take the lead and he then held off Epangeline and Schnittker to win by two lengths in 1:58.1. Gladiator Lindy held for third.

"I was very happy; it was exactly what I wanted to do with him," Antonacci said of Crazed's victory. "I wanted to sit on his back and let him sprint home and he was very good, a last quarter in :27.4. It was a training mile going off the gate for the Matron (elims Nov. 2 at Dover Downs)."

Crazed’s qualifying start was his first appearance since finishing second in the second heat of the Kentucky Futurity Oct. 4 at The Red Mile. The winner of the $500,000 Colonial Trot at Harrah’s Chester and $1.5 million Hambletonian runner-up, Crazed handed Dewey his first-ever defeat in the Sept. 6 Canadian Trotting Classic eliminations. The son of Credit Winner has $881,556 in earnings this year.

As for Epangeline, the daughter of Conway Hall was coming off a fourth-place finish in the second heat of the Oct. 3 Kentucky Filly Futurity at The Red Mile. Earlier this year she won the Empire Breeders Classic at Vernon Downs.
