The upsets continued at the Meadowlands Saturday as 12-1 Creamy Mimi and Andy Miller used a pocket trip to score a 1:53.4 victory in the $750,000 Hambletonian Oaks. Even money favorite Lantern Kronos closed late but fell a length and a quarter short at the wire for Brian Sears. Stage Show and John Campbell were third.
Once at the top of the lane, the duo pulled from the pylons and quickly distanced themselves from the field. But Lantern Kronos, racing third over around the turn, made up considerable ground reeled in the leader in the stretch, passing Stage Show for the runner-up spot. "The tripped worked out perfect," Miller said. "That's what we talked about, getting away up close sitting in and getting a good trip. My filly felt real strong and super. I thought she'd take me to the wire. A couple of them came late but she had enough to fight them off, dug in game." The Conway Hall filly, already a five-time winner this season, is trained by Trond Smedshammer. Creamy Mimi is owned by Marvin Katz and Al J. Libfeld of Ontario, Canada. The victory established a new lifetime mark and pushed the sophomore trotter’s earnings to nearly $780,000.
