The team behind 2007 Trotter of the Year and Hambletonian winner Donato Hanover were back in the winner’s circle with another promising trotting prospect, Victor Blue Chip, on Thursday night at the Meadowlands as the 2-year-old colt came first-up to take the lead and drew off to a 1 1/4-length victory over his entrymate Salutation Hanover in the first of three $36,000 Harriman Cup divisions for trotters.
He paid $7.80 to win the night’s second race. Ron Pierce drove Victor Blue Chip (Credit Winner-Precious Lindy) to the 1:57.3 win for trainer Steve Elliott and owners David Scharf and Robert Rosenheim. All four connections, along with Victor Blue Chip’s caretaker, Ann Christin Johnsen, were part of the team that guided Donato Hanover into the record books last season.
“He was well within himself,” Pierce said. “I planned on sitting with him and moving him at the end. We went a :30.4 second quarter and I couldn’t get anyone to cover me up. I sat him on the outside at the three-quarter pole and knew no one was going to catch him from there. I just let him trot on his own home. To me, he looks like the real deal.” The winners of the other two Harriman Cup divisions were Vacation Day (Dream Vacation-Shutter Hanover), 1:59, driven by John Campbell and Broadwaylonghall (Broadway Hall-Rosemary T), 1:58.1, driven by Yannick Gingras. Two $42,000 Goshen Cup divisions for 2-year-old colt pacers were also contested on Thursday night. Campbell guided Major In Art (Art Major-Miami Spice) to a 1:58.1 in the first of the two races. In the second Goshen Cup division, Brian Sears drove Mobile (Real Desire-Hidden Virtue) to victory in 1:55.3. (Meadowlands)
