Tom Crouch, Alan J. Leavitt and Timothy J. Rooney have been elected to harness racing’s Living Hall of Fame in Goshen, N.Y., by members of the U.S. Harness Writers Association (USHWA). In addition,
Leavitt is a past recipient of USHWA’s prestigious Proximity Achievement Award and twice named the U.S. Trotting Association’s Breeder of the Year. He is president and general manager of Walnut Hall Ltd. which was established in 1993 on his wife and farm owner Meg Jewett’s 570-acres of property in Crouch founded Kentuckiana Farms in 1975, which was followed five years later by his helping co-found the Kentucky Standardbred Sales Company, now consolidated into the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale.
Rooney was named Yonkers Raceway president when his family first purchased the racetrack in 1972, and in 2006 he was one of the driving forces behind the $225 million renovation of the track that now includes more than 5,300 video gaming machines. Rooney has also bred and raced Standardbreds for more than 40 years, including such greats as BG’s Bunny and Lis Mara.
The quintet will be honored two times--on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 at the "Night of Stars" dinner at the Bellagio in Las Vegas during the Harness Racing Congress, and on Sunday, July 5, 2009, in formal induction ceremonies for the Hall of Fame in Goshen, N.Y.
