Cullen hurt when bike snaps

February 22, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Al Cullen was sent tumbling to the racetrack at Western Fair in London, Ont., on Monday, the spill occuring as a result of his race sulky breaking.

"I'm fine. I'm just banged up a little bit," said Cullen the following afternoon. "(I feel) a little bit sore but I am fine today."

Cullen was aboard the 1-5 favorite Stonebridge Celest in the $14,400 Preferred Pace for fillies and mares and right after the start Cullin was moving his charge to the lead when his AdvantEdge sulky snapped in half, right below the seat.

Cullen hit the ground hard with the lines still in his hand as the rest of the field scattered behind. Cullen held on for a few strides before being kicked in the groin by the 4-year-old Camluck mare. Stonebridge Celest then raced around the track with the broken sulky still attached before she was slowed and stopped by driver Donnie Rankin, who was behind Keltic Sarah.
