Dali stroked a 1:49.1 victory in the first of two $31,519 Matron Stakes eliminations at Dover Downs on Monday, while in similar style, but a few ticks slower, Blueridge Western cruised to a 1:51.1 triumph in the other Matron elim.

After First Rate with Tim Curtin cut out the pace until reaching the grandstand stretch, Ron Pierce zipped up with Dali to assume command and lead the rest of a scorching 1:49.2 mile, one fifth of a second off the track set by Rapid Dialing five years ago. Lisfinny closed well for David Miller to finish second with Santanna Blue Chip and Jody Jamieson not far behind in third. First Rate hung in for fourth the last qualifying spot for next week's $249,000 final.

Dali won previously at the track, notching a 1:50.1 victory in a Progress Pace elim. In his previous start Dali finished fourth in the Breeders Crown. Owned by Uncirculated Stable of Brantford, Ont., the pacer currently has banked $474,000.

Dave Palone never looked back in the second $41,519 Matron elim driving Blueridge Western and leading at all posts for a 1:51.1 score. Proper Respect enjoyed a good trip behind the winner and finished second with Pierce in the bike. Jo Pa's Wild Card came on in the stretch for third with Corey Callahan handling the reins. Mystery Chase was the other qualifier with Donnie Russell driving.

The win by Blueridge Western was his fourth of the year for the $534,435 moneymaker. This victory, a fourth in a Breeders Crown elim and a third in the final, have begun to pay dividends for Francis Azur of Corapolis, Pa. who bought the Allamerican Ingot- Her Airness gelding at the recent Harrisburg sale.
