Mike Wilder tipped Dancing With Fire from fifth at the half and despite having to race first-over the rest of the distance, the Norm Parker trainee had enough left to draw clear by open lengths to win the $31,100 Opening Bell Series final Tuesday afternoon at The Meadows.
Wilder sent Dancing With Fire on his overland mission as the half was reached in :55.4 by Westside Dragon and driver Tony Hall. Dancing With Fire cleared his rival past the 1:24.1 three-quarters and then was able to open up daylight over his rivals in the stretch to win in 1:53.2. Monster Dragon rallied late for Ed Hensley to pick up runner-up honors, with the Dan Charlino-driven Special Character third.
Dancing With Fire came within a nose of sweeping the four-week series. The 4-year-old son of The Panderosa, bred and owned by Bob Key, had posted two victories in the preliminaries and also had a second-place finish by the slimmest of margins.
The win was Dancing With Fire's fourth in seven starts this year, increasing his seasonal earnings to $38,920. Out of the Cam Fella mare Starlight Dancer, Dancing With Fire is a half brother to the $288,894-winning Fire Within K.
