Dan Dengel dies

Return Home
August 17, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Veteran horseman Dan Dengel, who competed at racetracks in Ontario and Michigan for more than 30 years, died Thursday night shortly after driving one of his horses at Hazel Park. He was 52.

Mr. Dengel drove the 4-year-old trotting mare Incredible Barb in the fifth race at Hazel Park Thursday and, according to witnesses, had just placed his race sulky in his trailer when he apparently suffered a massive heart attack. Attempts to revive Mr. Dengel were unsuccessful.

As well as being a horseman, Mr. Dengel was also a representative of the local Teamsters union and represented workers at the Michigan racetracks. Incredible Barb, just as most of the horses Mr. Dengel trained over the years, was owned by Lawrence Brennan, president of local Teamsters 337 and Joint Council 43 in Michigan.
