Dan Patch to Maltese Artist

Return Home
April 30, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Maltese Artist rocketed away from the field at the head of the stretch and cruised to the wire with a 1:49.4 victory in the $200,00 Dan Patch Invitational at Hoosier Park Saturday night. Canyon Wind and David Miller made a late, middle of the track rally to be second with Whosurboy and Rick Macomber Jr. finishing third.

With Ron Pierce in the bike, Maltese Artist left from outside post nine and was three wide through the first turn as He Wants It All and Tony Morgan battled Admiral's Express and Brad Kramer for the early lead. After an opening quarter in :26.1, Admiral's Express assumed the lead, only to see Maltese Artist quickly brush to the front before the :53.4 half.

As the field turned for home Eaton Road Kill and Daniel Dube mounted a first-over challenge, but Maltese Artist, who set an all-age world record of 1:48.3f in the Pacing Classic at Dover Downs, quickly pulled away from the field by open lengths. His victory never in doubt, he cruised to the wire with the victory.

George Leon, John Howard and James Koran own the winning 4-year-old gelding by Artiscape who scored his fifth triumph of the year in 10 starts for trainer Michael Burke.
