Davis wins Billings division at The Meadows

Brent "The Zanesville Clipper" Davis won the CKG Billings Amateur circuit Midwest Regional contest Wednesday afternoon at The Meadows, driving Colonel Talbot to a 2:02.1 victory over longshot Tropicante, who was in rein to "Trader Bud" Hatfield, with Spit Happens and "Chicago George" Bonomo third.

In 2003, Davis was named the Amateur Driver of the Year, but in recent years his personal schedule didn’t allow him the time to be a regular of the Billings circuit. However, Davis, a hair salon owner from Zanesville, Ohio is hoping to be more involved this year though arguably many of his competitors rather he wouldn’t after his win Wednesday at The Meadows.

“Buckboard Bob” Miller cut the early fractions with Easy Chaser and though they still had the lead when the field turned for home, Easy Chaser tired and finished fourth.

It was only the second Billings start for Davis; in his previous Billings race at Scioto Downs on May 28 he drove Colonel Talbot to a second-place finish.

Colonel Talbot, a 5-year-old gelding by Mr. Lavec, who had a tremendous sophomore career where he bankrolled over $228,000, scored his third seasonal victory. And for Davis, the win was his 133rd since he began driving in 1982. (Billings)

The Billings Series will continue on Sunday, June 15 with eastern regional action at Saratoga Harness on Sunday, June 15. That same day  Balmoral Park  will host the midwest region competitors.
