Trainer Del S. Miller suffered a broken hip in a training mishap before Friday's card at The Meadows and will undergo surgery Monday for insertion of a metal rod.
Driver Brett Miller, Del's son, indicated the accident occurred on the auxiliary training track when a horse the elder Miller was jogging "got spooked,” veered from the track and dumped him from the cart.
"He said when he hit the ground, he heard his hip snap,” Brett Miller said.
He was transported by ambulance to Canonsburg Hospital, where the surgery will be performed. Although doctors are not yet able to provide a recuperation timetable, Brett Miller indicated his father could be released from the hospital as soon as Monday, his 57th birthday.
On the card, Magic Starlight roared past her stablemate, Darena Hanover, in the lane to capture the $20,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Pace—her second straight victory and fourth in the last five starts.
Magic Starlight and Dave Palone followed the live cover of Sissy Bar before making the decisive move around the final turn. The 4-year-old daughter of Real Desire-Starlight Justice prevailed in 1:54 on a sloppy surface, a length better than Darena Hanover. Early leader All Heart Gal saved show.
Ron Burke trains Magic Starlight, who extended her career bankroll to $210,153, for Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and Phillip Collura. Palone and Burke teamed for three winners on the 15-race card, and Tony Hall also enjoyed a triple. (The Meadows)
