Michigan-based horseman Dennis Marchand was killed Sunday while driving his pickup truck hauling two broodmares when he was struck broadside by a teenage driver. Marchand, 52, was killed instantly in the accident that occurred about 2:20 p.m. near Swartz Creek. The horses escaped serious injury except for one suffering a broken jaw. The Canadian-born Marchand drove 1,039 winners over his career with purse earnings of more than $2.4 million. Since the U.S. Trotting Association began keeping training records in 1991, Marchand conditioned 276 winners with more than $827,000 in purse earnings. Passing the 1,000-win milestone in the fall of 2005, Marchand had driven most recently two horses at Northville Downs on Saturday night. Funeral services for Marchand will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Swartz Funeral Home at 1225 Hill Road in Flint. Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 11 a.m. until the services begin.
