Det. Freep drops results

Racing coverage in the metro-Detroit area just got a little smaller as the Detroit Free Press has dropped carrying race results and it took a last-minute plea from handicapper Bill "Raylebird" Rayle to keep the newspaper from also dropping entries and selections.

Rayle said he was initially contacted by sports editor Gene Myers a few weeks ago that the entire racing coverage from the area, including Northville Downs and Windsor Raceway, which are currently racing, and the state's flagship harness track Hazel Park (which opens in April and continues through early October), would be eliminated. Rayle said he met last week with Myers and sports agate editor Bernie Czarniecki and managed to convince them to leave the entries and selections intact.

"I was able to convince them there was still a viable audience for racing," said Rayle, who is celebrating his 20th year as harness handicapper for the Free Press. "They admitted they were prepared for the complaints, though."

The Detroit News dropped its race coverage from Windsor Raceway several years ago, but still carries entries and results from all the metro-Detroit racetracks.
