Devilfish not bluffing

Off of a pair of monstrous May qualifiers downstate, Devilfish debuted at Hawhthorne Thursday night with high expectations for trainer Erv Miller, and the 3-year-old son of Cam’s Card Shark certainly didn’t disappoint, romping to victory in 1:51.2 in his first lifetime start.

Owned by Vandalay Racing, Devilfish was sent right to the top by Hall of Famer driver Dave Magee in the evening’s ninth race, and after cutting out fast but even fractions of :28.3, :56.3 and 1:25, he drew off under very little urging to win by 7 1/2 lengths over a stunned Fifty-Fifty. His time was more than two seconds faster than the second-quickest clocking of the night.

Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott is one of the world’s most feared poker players, and his namesake in the Standardbred world doesn’t appear to be bluffing.
