Devilfish wins in 1:48.3

A 45-degree night set the stage for a speed parade at the Meadowlands Friday evening with the 4-year-old pacer Devilfish capping off the program with a 1:48.3, open-lengths victory in a division of the Clyde Hirt Series. Most of the divisions of the Clyde Hirt and the Complex all were clocked in 1:50 and change.

Devilfish was fired to the front by driver Andy Miller and had control of the race early. But then Miller yielded to Wonderful One, driven by Ron Pierce, on the backstretch. Wonderful One, who had been racing at Balmoral Park for trianer Nelson Willis, paced away from the field heading into the last turn, but couldn't sustain his pace.

Devilfish chipped away at the distance in the stretch drive but had plenty of racetrack to get the job done, drawing off to the open-lengths score.

Devilfish, a gelded son of Cam's Card Shark, is trained by Erv Miller nad owned by Daniel Waxman's Vandalay Racing. Last year Devilfish flashed speed early in the summer and won four of eight starts, but couldn't handle the top colts and tailed off.

Other Clyde Hirt division winners were Michelle's Gemstone (1:50.2), JK CU Laker (1:50.4), who won by just a neck over Crawdad, and Carr's Character, who prevailed by a head in 1:50.4 in a four-horse photo finish..

The Complex--for 5 year olds non-winners of four pari-mutuel races or $125,000 lifetime, was contested in two divisions. The winners were White Hot Cards, a 4-year-old Cam's Card Shark stallion, in 1:50.2; Super Eight Eight, a 5-year-old gelded son of Jenna's Beach Boy, who won his third race in a row, this one clocked in a llkifetime best 1:50.2; and Odds On BP, who scored in 1:51..
