Dewey at Cornell with throat abcess; might miss Crown

According to a report on theharnessedge.com web site, a "freakish abcess" in the throat of Deweycheatumnhowe could result in him being scratched from next Saturday night's $500,000 Breeders Crown, and the colt is at Cornell University in New York for a diagnosis.

The web site said trainer Ray Schnittker shipped the 3-year-old colt to Cornell. The harnessedge.com story reads as follows:

"My wife (Dr. Janet Durso) scoped him after he'd been sort of slobbering the last couple days and saw whatever it is," said Schnittker. "We sent him right over to Cornell University where Dr. Norm Ducharme is looking into things.

"It could be something and it could be nothing at this point. I'm guessing I will know more come Monday, but if he is not 100 percent, he will not be racing. Yes, there's some potential money on the table but he has absolutely nothing left to prove. Whatever is best for the horse is what will be done."

Deweycheatumnhowe was scheduled to make an appearance at the Meadowlands Saturday night even though he was not racing. He was slated to start in the Crown final on Nov. 29 before heading for Walnut Hall Ltd. in Lexington to prepare for his stud career.
