Deweycheatumnhowe kept his perfect record intact as he rallied from far back to win the $175,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes final for 2-year-old trotting colts on Wednesday night at the Meadowlands.
The son of Muscles Yankee closed from seventh at the top of the stretch to best Atomic Hall by a neck in 1:57 for driver, trainer and co-owner, Ray Schnittker. Blue York Yankee was three-quarters of a length behind in third. Sent off the 4-5 favorite, Deweycheatumnhowe returned $3.60, $2.60 and $2.40. Atomic Hall paid $7.20 and $4.20 to place. Blue York Yankee was worth $2.80 to show.
It was the fourth straight stakes win for Deweycheatumnhowe, who also won the Harriman Cup and two preliminary legs of the New Jersey Sire Stakes. Schnittker, who resides in Middletown, shares ownership of the colt with fellow New Yorkers Charles Iannazzo of Tappan, Frank Baldassare of Monroe and Ted Gewertz of New York City. Deweycheatumnhowe was an $80,000 yearling purchase at the 2006 Lexington Selected Sale. (Meadowlands)
