Ray Schnittker told The Horseman Friday afternoon that he is still optimistic his star 3-year-old colt trotter, Deweycheatumnhowe, will start in next weekend’s Breeders Crown final at the Meadowlands after the colt was taken to the Cornell University Veterinary Clinic on Thursday after he spiked a temperature. “He’s a little better. Put it this way, if he was a $15,000 claimer he’d be racing,” said Schnittker, who trains, drives and co-owns Deweycheatumnhowe, who likely will be the betting favorite in the $500,000 Crown final. “He’s got a half of a hard ball where all the mechanics are in his throat, but it looks like it’s going down now. And his temperature has stayed down.”
Schnittker said Dewey began to exhibit signs of sickness on Wednesday so he had his wife, veterinarian Dr. Janet Durso, do an examination.
“He spiked a temperature and he was slobbering. I didn’t know why he was slobbering,” said Schnittker. “I took him to Cornell (Thursday) and they said it could be a swollen lymph node or a sliver or something in an abscess in there. It’s not life threatening, but with the type of horse he is you don’t want to have any screw-ups.”
With Dewey already having been entered, Schnittker could wait until the last possible second until making a decision on whether or not to race the colt in the Crown. Schnittker said he would know more on Monday, Nov. 24. The Breeders Crown is scheduled to be Dewey’s last race before heading to retirement at Walnut Hall Ltd. in
