Deweycheatumnhowe taking up residence at Walnut Hall Ltd.

Deweycheatumnhowe was officially welcomed to his new home at Walnut Hall Ltd. outside Lexington, Ky.,  Saturday morning by Alan and Meg Leavitt. Looking none the worse for wear after his accident-interrupted trip from Goshen, N.Y., the 3-year-old son of Muscles Yankee was quite observant of the other stallions in their nearby paddocks and mares grazing in a distant field. Retired from racing with 22 wins in 25 starts and $3,155,178 in career earnings, he will be gin stud duty with the 2009 breeding season.

“We’re just so thrilled to have him here,” said Meg.  

Deweycheatumnhowe arrived in the Bluegrass Thursday evening, a day later than scheduled. The trailer driven by the colt’s trainer-driver and co-owner Ray Schnittker hit some black ice on a highway in Pennsylvania, slid off the road down an embankment and turned over. Dewey emerged unscathed while Schnittker’s wife, Dr. Janet Durso, suffered a separated shoulder. After being transported by another trailer to Vieux Carre Farm in Gettysburg, Pa., and examined by Dr. John Egloff, Schnittker continued the journey to Lexington on Thursday.

Alan Leavitt called it a miracle that the horse was unhurt and “how lucky we are that the horse is here to take his picture today. We’re just so lucky that Ray and Janet are ok and that the horse is ok.”
