Using a new racing strategy, Deweycheatumnhowe sat in the pocket for Saturday's $1 million Canadian Trotting Classic at Mohawk and got up to win in 1:53.2. Dewey overcame post 10, left with Celebrity Secret (Ron Pierce) on his inside and got to the front by the :27.3 opening quarter. Crazed and Tim Tetrick were parked through the turn but took the lead at the three-eighths. Slowing the speed to a :56.2 half, Crazed continued to lead with Dewey sitting right on Tetrick’s helmet. Trevor Ritchie had Clerk Magistrate on the move first up sitting third just outside of Dewey at the 1:25.1 third quarter. Coming down the stretch Dewey was sandwiched between Crazed on the inside and Clerk Magistrate on the outside. But Dewey prevailed and won by two lengths over Clerk Magistrate; Crazed faded to third with Napoleon (John Campbell) getting up for fourth. “I was pretty disappointed last week but they all get beat,” said trainer, driver and co-owner Ray Schnittker. “When we drew the 10 hole I didn’t really like my chances but he just showed me how good a horse he is. He’s an unbelievable horse. “I think he is a lot better out of the hole obviously, everyone can see that…Actually, I was thinking before the race of taking him right back to last. But I was watching the races and no one was coming from last and we are going for a million dollars. I left out of there hard…I was hoping someone would come and cover me up which Crazed did which worked out great.”
Deweycheatumnhowe now has more than $2.7 million in career earnings for owners Ray Schnittker, Ted Gewertz, Charles Iannazzo and the Deweycheatumnhowe Stable. Dewey took his lifetime mark of 1:50.4 just two weeks ago at Du Quoin in the World Trotting Derby.
