Leading driver Josh Marks collected four wins during Thursday night’s 10-race card at Vernon Downs, including a 1:56.2 score with Scorpion Moon in the $8,500 featured ninth event. Also, the track announced Deweycheatumnhowe will start in a special $20,000 Invitational Friday, Oct. 31, in preparation for the Breeders Crown.
Leaving from post six against six select opponents, Scorpion Moon rallied to the lead en route to the half, reached in :57.4, and remained in charge to the finish of the 1:56.2 mile, winning the week’s top Miracle Mile trotting division by a neck over the pocket-sitting Magic.
It was the third local tally and 16th season’s score for the steady-going 7-year-old gelding, who is shared in ownership by leading trainer Tracy Brainard and Andrew Herzog. Having earned $196,762 in 22 current attempts, the gelded son of Armbro Scorpion has increased his lifetime bankroll to more than $440,900.
Marks also finished first with the trotters Moonlight Lilly, in 1:58.4 for trainer-owner Adam Capizzano in Thursday’s second race; Bluestone, in 1:57.3 for trainer Brainard and owners Robert Schneider, Mark Capone and Samir Tawil in the seventh session, and the pacer Mixup Hanover, in 1:58.3 for trainer Lonny Hale and the Hale Storm Stable in the fifth event, hiking his victory total to 111 after 83 programs.
