Following a cozy pocket trip, Diamond Hunter charged through the Lightning Lane to capture Wednesday’s $22,500 Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows. Sporting newly added blinkers, Diamond Hunter shot to the lead for Brett Miller before yielding to the 6-5 favorite, Bettis, who was seeking his third straight victory. Bettis raced well, but Diamond Hunter outkicked him in the lane, downing him by a head in 1:56.2 over a “good” track. Springboard was a rallying third. Jeff Cox trains Diamond Hunter, a 6-year-old Fortunefivehundred-Erikas First Lady gelding who now boasts $214,358 in career earnings, for Sherree Cox and Richard McNutt. Dave Palone drove three winners — all for trainer Ron Burke — while Miller also fashioned a triple on the 14-race card. (The Meadows)
