Donato Hanover strengthened his position as the Hambletonian favorite when he breezed to his eleventh straight win in the $400,000 Stanley Dancer Memorial on Saturday night at the Meadowlands.
Driver Ron Pierce nudged Donato Hanover to the lead before the half and, admittedly, “just sat there” as he cruised to a 1:54.2 victory. Mythical Lindy closed off a second-over trip to finish a length behind in second, while Please Poppy was third. Donato Hanover paid $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10. Mythical Lindy returned $4.00 and $2.10 to place, while Please Poppy paid $2.10 to show. “I was thinking everybody who was behind me was in a little trouble, because they were racing for second money at that point [in the stretch],” Pierce said. “I haven’t asked him for anything yet. I was just sitting there. It was like a training mile. I don’t see anything out there that can get close to him now.” Donato Hanover is perfect in three starts this season and remains the prohibitive favorite heading into the $1.5 million Hambletonian, the sport’s most prestigious event, on August 4 at the Meadowlands. Trained by Steve Elliott, Donato Hanover won eight of nine races and divisional honors as a freshman. His only loss was his career debut on June 22, 2006. Donator Hanover is owned by David Scharf of New York, New York; Steve Arnold of Purchase, New York; and Paul Bordogna’s Golden Touch Stable of Fair Lawn, New Jersey.
