Donato, Flirtin Man take Futurity eliminations

Donato Hanover and Flirtin Man won their respective eliminations of the $742,000 Kentucky Futurity Saturday afternoon at The Red Mile, with each leading the top five finishers in those elims into a second heat under hot and muggy conditions.

Flirtin Man won the first elim after a third-over trip for driver and co-owner John Campbell. Supplemental entry Green Day, driven by Jim Raymer, set fractions of :28.1, :56.3 and 1:24.1 but was unable to last down The Red Mile stretch as Flirtin Man rushed past to win in 1:52.2.

Standpoint slipped up the inside for Trond Smedshammer to finish second, with Green Day holding on for third. Also earning a return ticket for the second hear were the fourth and fifth-place finishers Rune and Mythical Lindy, respectively.

Campbell's Juniper II Stable shares ownership of the son of Angus Hall with Brittany Farms and Let It Ride Stables. Gary Napierala is the trainer.

Donato Hanover, under a confident drive from Ron Pierce, had no problems in the second elim, easily trotting away from his competition down the stretch to cross the finish line in 1:51.1.

Pierce floated Donato Hanover away from the gate and took the lead coming out of the first turn from Please Poppy and driver Yannick Gingras. But the lead was short-lived as Pierce then gave way to the Montreal shipper Val Taurus and driver Mike Lachance.

As Val Taurus reached the half on top in :54.4, Pierce waited patiently in the two hole. But heading around the final turn Pierce pulled the pocket and moved to the outside to take aim at Val Taurus. It was no match as Donato Hanover moved past as they reached the 1:24 three quarters, drawing clear to the victory as Val Taurus faded to ninth.

Arch Madness rallied for Brian Sears to finish second with the filly Pampered Princess third for Campbell. Please Poppy and Photo Maxx finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to also earn a spot on the starting gate in the second heat.

Trained by Steve Elliott, the winning son of Andover Hall is owned by David Scharf, Steve Arnold, Paul Bordogna and the Donato Hanover Syndicate.
