Donato Hanover was the easiest of winners in the first of two Peter Haughton Memorial 2-Year-Old Colt Trot eliminations Wednesday night at the Meadowlands, while Mythical Lindy recovered from a break to win a mistake-filled second split.
Driver Ron Pierce tipped the 2-5 favorite Donato Hanover from fourth at the quarter to take a lead he never lost. Drawing clear down the stretch and with whipped safely tucked underneath is right arm, Pierce directed the son of Andover Hall to a 1:56.2 victory, his third straight and a career best. Finishing 3 1/4 lengths behind in second was Bet To Win (Ray Remmen), who made a mild first-over bid around the final turn. Early leader Bamboo Yankee (Ray Schnittker) held on for third, with Gliding Myth and Manfinity also earning return tickets for the $456,000 final Thursday, Aug. 3.
Donato Hanover is a half brother to freshman world champion Here Comes Herbie, who drew post one in the first of two Hambletonian eliminations Saturday at the Big M. Owned by David Scharf, Golden Touch Stable and Steven Arnold, Donato Hanover is trained by Steve Elliott, who won the Meadowlands Pace two weeks ago with Artistic Fella.
Mythical Lindy got a bit riled up coming out of the first turn when caught behind a breaking Rushmore Hanover, but David Miller was able to gather his charge up and get him back onstride down the backstretch. Working his way back into contention around the final turn, he then had to avoid a breaking Strive For Perfect, who was part of the even-money favored entry with Rushmore Hanover. Miller appeared to be headed for a second-place finish with Mythical Lindy when apparent winner Around And Over (Trond Smedshammer) went on a break right before the wire. Mythical Lindy was able to cross the wire first in 1:57.4.
Around And Over was moved back to fourth by the Meadowlands' stewards, with third-place finisher Stunt Man Hall (Toby Lynch) elevated to second and Impeto Grif (Marco Smorgon), a son of Varenne prepped in Italy for the Haughton, placed third. Anton K (Yannick Gingras) earned the final spot in the final.
Second choice in the betting at odds of 2-1, Mythical Lindy is owned by Thomas York Jr. and Joe Sbrocco, the latter being breeder and co-owner of Hambletonian favorite Mr. Pine Chip. A son of SJ's Caviar, Mythical Lindy is trained by Jim Arledge Jr. The win was his second in three starts and a career best.
